I had a 3-month-old baby text me a few months ago...
Actually, it was her Grandfather and Mother that contacted me. They wanted to celebrate the newest member of the family’s 100 days of life. The family has Korean heritage, and they celebrate “Baek-il,” which is held on the 100th day after the child’s birth. So, we set a date for the session; I moved the unnecessary equipment out of the studio to ensure we had plenty of room for all the family and whatever props they needed to bring
This is celebrated because long ago in Korea, childhood diseases were common, and the survival rate for newborn babies was very low. The high death rate was partly due to Korea's harsh winters, humid summers, and many other childhood-related diseases. To protect their children and to give them the best chance of survival, parents refrained from taking the baby outdoors until the 100th day after the birth.
I had never photographed a Baek-il celebration and wasn’t sure what to expect, so I did some research, and it looked like we were about to have a good time with some traditional items and outfits.
So how did it go? Here are a few photos.
The result was that they purchased over 50 printed memories they could hand down from generation to generation. It’s hard to describe how great it is to create images that will mean so much for so long, but “incredible” is a good start.
